What we’re about

The endearing vision of this project is centered around one variety: Syrah. So few varieties can spark the imagination and tastebuds like this grape can, this being best illustrated by comparing Syrah from various locales. This under-appreciated variety refuses to be pigeon-holed into just one style of wine. The personality of Syrah can vary dramatically depending on where it is grown and what type of soils it is planted in. Because of this, it is by nature an indefinable entity that can morph into whatever it decides to express. It is this tendency of stubborn individualism that makes the creation of superb wine from this variety all the more satisfying. After all, who doesn’t relish the opportunity to grab hold the reigns of an untamed spirit, just to ride in its wake for awhile?

Unfortunately for Syrah, it is this same diversity that has contributed to its lack of mass appeal (beyond those cheap imported “shiraz” that taste like melted popsicles with wood chips) or general acceptance beyond those few wine enthusiasts that like a good challenge. Because Syrah has this tendency to be different depending on where it is grown and what you do with it, the average consumer seems unable to wrap its mind around a single definition of the grape, and therefore is lead to make many false assumptions as to what this variety is “supposed to be”.

We feel Syrah should be what it wants to be. To be able to freely express its terroir (there, you made me say it), both soil and climate. Listen close, this grape has a story to tell.
